Last October we participated in the poetry festival 2010 Poetas por km2 at La Casa de América in Madrid.

With the installation 1.000 poems by mail, we wanted to illuminate the poetry and at the same time and ensure that the visitors actively enjoyed the installation.

To do this, we filled the garden with 1,000 white envelopes containing poems written especially for the occasion by the poets who participated in the festival.

The lit envelopes remained hanging in the garden for 3 days, serving as intimate illumination for the poetic festival. The last night, with light still in the interior, they were offered to the public as keepsakes, or better yet, for them to address to a loved one, to whom we would send the envelope.

With the intervention we wanted to look a little towards the past, in a nostalgic way and remember times in which important words travelled in envelopes.

We also wanted each person that read the poetic message, to think of an important person to whom they would like it to arrive.

We collected about 100 envelopes with addresses which we hurried to send to their recipients. Knowing that the letters arrived still illuminated filled us with joy.

Thanks to the poets, Ajo, Peru Saizprez, Mayra Oyuela, Javier de la Rosa, Javier Nadie, La Más Bella, Raúl Zurita, Julián Herbert, Reynaldo Jiménez, Emila Persola, Héctor Avellán, Linda Wong, Eduardo Scala, Pep Gómez, Maria Eloy-García, Josep Pedrals, Gabriel Vallecillo, for creating a work of art for us to illuminate.

It was a pleasure to work with Pepe and Fabio who made everything so easy for us, and with the team that were voluntarily and diligently installing the 1,000 envelopes with us.

We cannot forget Enrique Morente, who gifted us with his last concert and took an illuminated envelope with him.

Trying to fill ourselves with the best of the Christmas spirit, on the 23rd of December we decided to accompany Santa Claus’s envoys on their search for Christmas gifts.

With a very, very limited budget because of the crisis, we had no choice but to stay far away from the customary temples of consumerism, to find an alternative means of acquiring their merchandise during these times.

We walked with them, searching the overfilled garbage containers, in which we were able to find, besides the expected broken objects, other which were completely usable.

Our Christmas action, of minimum cost, we call Shopping with Santa Claus and to carry it out, we simply acquired two typical Christmas dolls, from the corner store, we covered them with lights and transporting them in a shopping cart, we walked during the night, through the streets in the center of the city, inspecting the discarded objects we found along the way.

Through our nighttime intervention, we want to remind you that in Madrid, the number of people that eat and live from what they find in the garbage containers, has grown in an alarming manner since the beginning of the crisis, in spite of the fact that City Hall, completely against these practices, decided in 2009 to punish anyone caught in the act with a fine of up to 700 euros.

On this busy night, we were accompanied by Gustavo Sanabria, to whom the photos belong.

Cojines de hojas secas para sentarse sobre el frío espacio público / Cushions of dry leaves to sit on in the cold public places

As we have already said many times, the public spaces in Madrid are lacking the color green. With the renovation of the plazas in the center of the city many trees have disappeared, to make room for cold slabs of granite, more desireable in the commercialization of a space, which in theory is for everyone, but in practice is reserved for the brand names so that they can sell us their particular vision of entertainment in the street…

With our intervention Dry leaves over urban grey we wanted to add a little bit of nature, to our grey surroundings, placing dried leaves packaged in the form of cushions so that all who wanted to sit and contemplate the night could do so without becoming cold.

We carried out our installation on the 2nd of December, that same afternoon we collected thousands of fallen leaves in a nearby park, with which we made our cushions and at midnight we went out into the street to look for especially inhospitable places where we left our only cargo.

We walked the streets for 4 hours and left some 50 cushions in doorways, on benches and steps, outside display windows, in plazas and various corners, all of them dark and without trees.

On our walk we also carried all the extra leaves we did not use so that we could leave them beneath one of the streetlights that have replaced the trees in the urban landscape.

Our friend Alberto de Pedro helped us with the preparation and accompanied us on our journey, you can see his photos from that night in his blog.
