Celebrando la llegada de 1984 Celebrating the arrival of 1984

From the traditional neighborhhod of Lavapiés in Madrid, where there are already 48 new surveillance cameras operating, installed “for our security”, we want to wish you a Happy 1984.

With the intention of demonstrating that the dystopian assumptions of George Orwell are closer to reality all the time, we carried out the action "Happy 1984" carefully choosing 3 locations of maximum surveillance in the neighborhood, in which we lit a total of 500 birthday candles, which we blew out with great devotion, with the wish that Big Brother does not continue to gain ground in the city.

In addition, we wanted to join together with the actions and mobilizations of protest, initiated by artists, designers and neighbors, against the surveillance, in a barrio in which tolerance and multiculturalism, now seem to be under suspicion.

The photos, as always, are by Gustavo Sanabria.

Thanks to Noelia who helped us and recorded all.

We wish you a Happy and Luminous 1984 and smile a lot, they are recording us…

Domingo envasando recuerdos/ Sunday packaging mementos

With our installation, Caged Mementos, shining in all its splendor, after being reinstalled and perfectly secured, we are inspired to show you the images of what happened that particular Sunday on which we held our collection of objects in the Plaza de Ministriles in Madrid.

The photos say it all, there was a great influx of people, hot chocolate, street music, people dancing and more than 300 mementos brought by the residents, some of the most sentimental and personal… others likeable… others improvised… in summary a day we will not forget.

Now, all those mementos are hanging in golden cages and at night they are illuminated with a cheery golden light, converting this grey square in the center of Madrid into a cheery public place, where you can stay awhile looking at the illuminated sky protected from the cold.

They will remain there until the 9th of January.

In the next few days we will upload the photos of the illuminated installation, there are by Gustavo Sanabria.

Recuerdos enjaulados y nevados / Caged, snow covered memories

Yesterday was an extraordinary day for us, for many reasons… the first and most important because we celebrated our first interactive installation, in which many residents helped us with their personal contributions, with the festive lighting of the neighborhood.

In addition we were able to stop traffic on a main street for 5 hours and in spite of the cold, everyone had a bright morning, dancing and eating a breakfast of chocolate and fried bread in the middle of the road.

To make it more enjoyable, it had snowed a lot during the night and this is not common in Madrid, the Plaza de Ministriles was beautiful, and the cages full of snow.

That morning the weight of the installation had increased considerably due to accumulation of snow and some of the cages had fallen, therefore the engineers, who know about these things advised us to take everything down and install it again once it had been reinforced to avoid any further problems.

Those who pass by the Plaza de Ministriles will be surprised that there are no hanging cages, but don’t worry they are all safe in our custody and on Wednesday the 23rd starting at 7 o’clock in the evening they will once again shine intensely.

Until then, we leave you with some photos that Gustavo Sanabria took of the complete, snow covered installation. Next Wednesday we will have many more and this time the mementos of each resident will shine as we had planned.

The representation of a recurring idea in our urban work: the more we insist on covering public spaces with layers and more layers of concrete and glass, there will always be a crack which natur can break through and reclain what once belonged to it.

Our installation, Glass Plant has nothing to do with Christmas, it is only a demonstration of this idea. To do this we focused on the ugly glass lifts that Metro Madrid has installed throughout the city.

We chose Plaza de España and Sainz de Baranda, where we inserted our lights into the freshly pruned cuttings, then the plants themselves, trying to mingle the sap with the cold, opaque , unsightly glass.

The installation took place on Wednesday the 2nd and Friday the 4th of December, and as always Gustavo Sanabria was with us, taking the photos, in spite of the cold, in spite of the hour.
